Monte Vista Community to Attend June 4 GUSD Board Meeting on DLI Programs
Families Urge District to Pause Split-Grade Plan and Fund Additional Teacher
LA CRESCENTA, CA—June 3, 2025—Parents of students in Monte Vista Elementary’s Korean Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program will attend a special Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, June 4 to urge district leaders to pause a planned 4th/5th grade split-level class and fund one additional teaching position for the 2025-2026 school year. The meeting will include the first district-wide DLI program report in years.
More than 50 parents and community members are expected, with many prepared to give public comment. Families are calling for an equitable, transparent approach to GUSD’s DLI programs, starting with a solution to avoid the Monte Vista split-grade class.
Recent Meetings & Findings
May 14 – Dr. Nancy Hong, GUSD Director of DLI Programs: In a lengthy phone call, Dr. Hong expressed that split-grade DLI classes are not ideal and said the community reaction to the Monte Vista plan was unexpected. She confirmed that she lacks authority on staffing and stressed the need for Board-level support and funding.
May 22 – Principal Hury Babayan, Monte Vista Elementary School: Babayan confirmed she and Dr. Hong requested an additional teacher, which was denied by HR. She also acknowledged the split is not ideal and is exploring alternatives, including hiring a Korean-speaking intern, which would require parent-led fundraising since school funds are limited. No explanation was given as to why schools with lower enrollment, like Keppel, are not being split.
May 27 – GUSD Board Member Ingrid Gunnell: Gunnell toured classrooms and met with parents. She was empathetic but warned the Board may not reverse the decision. She cited budget constraints and said that, even if the split affects performance, it may become permanent. Gunnell encouraged families to attend the June 4 meeting and continue engaging board members directly.
May 30 – GUSD Board President Shant Sahakian and Executive Assistant to the Superintendent Phyllis Ishisaka: In a 90-minute meeting with parent leaders, Sahakian pledged to support increased transparency and acknowledged that the June 4 meeting would be the Board’s first formal DLI update in years.
The Monte Vista community asks the Board of Education to pause implementation of the 4th/5th grade split, fund one additional teaching position, and work collaboratively with families to ensure consistency and equity across GUSD’s language programs.
